the 10 best search engines in the world
and how to put them to their best use.

One can search two types of information pools on the web:

  • Web search: A web search compiled by a search engine looking through all the web sites on the web and listing the most relevant ones according to your search terms. Such search engines crawl all the web sites on the web and select rank them according to specific algorithms developed by the search engines Google is the best example of such an engine.
  • Directory: A collection of web sites categorized using certain criterion. These web sites are submitted and people manage the inclusion of new web sites in the directory and under what category the web site fall. (Examples are Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ)

Google
Google is the #1 all round search engine. Search specific words or phrases with extremely accurate results. We have included a list of Google resources to help you make the most of it's features. The Google search on Alephsynergy uses the safesearch feature by default. This is to minimize adult content in the search results of our users.
Yahoo
Offers two options, a normal search or directory search. Yahoo is very good at locating subject specific information, because of the inclusion of it's directory entries in the searches. Click here to read more about how the Yahoo directory and web search options differ, this is true for most web searches and directories.
AskJeeves
Use AskJeeves for simple reference information (basic facts, current statistics, name identification).
AskJeeves has a bunch of useful services, access them here!
AOL Search
Offers services like instant messaging and email. Also uses a directory to list and categorize the web sites that is submitted to it.
MSN Search
Offers a drop-down list of options. One can search on shopping, news, dictionary, stock quotes ext. The well known Hotmail and Messenger services is also directly accessible.
Lycos
Offers a multimedia search service if you are looking for sound clips, video clips and pictures.
LookSmart
It has a very nifty article search tool, if you are looking for a specific article or articles on a subject, you will very likely find it here - if it is on the web :) Directory search and web search options are available as well.
Open Directory
Very nice for topic specific searches. The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors. Because of the growth rate of the internet many search engines can't manually look at each web sites content and check if it is applicable. The Open Directory is maintained by volunteers who each edit a certain area of web sites.
Alta Vista
Alta Vista offers a MP3 music search tool. The normal web and directory search is also available.
AllTheWeb
A good choice if you do not come right with Google.

Other useful search engines:
KidsClick
A search engine for kids by librarians, very good for school research! A safe search engine to use as well.

More information on the search and directory options

Locating information on the web one usually have two options:

  • Search returns a list of web pages containing the words you entered. These results are a combination of relevant web pages and web sites provided by the search engines search function in unison with the directory.
  • The Directory is a human-created and maintained library of web sites organized into categories and subcategories. Editors review these sites for potential inclusion in the Directory, and to evaluate the best place to list them.

The Search is helpful when:

  • Doing searches on keywords and phrases. I prefer Google for keyword and phrase searches.

The Directory is helpful when:

  • You're not sure how to describe what you want, or you're searching for words with multiple meanings. Behind the scenes, editors build in synonyms, cross-references, and relationships between subjects. For example, when you're ready for your close up, you might search for "casting" to get an audition. Your results will include sites from the related Directory category. I prefer DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory.
